Get the Furnace Ready:
a. Call an HVAC professional to inspect furnace and clean ducts.
b. If home is heated by a hot water radiator, bleed the valves by opening them slightly and when water appears, close them.
2. Get the Fireplace Ready:
a. Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds.
b. If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote.
3. Check the Exterior, Doors, and Windows:
a. Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them.
b. Use weather stripping around doors to prevent warm air from creeping to your roof, causing ice dams.
4. Inspect Roof, Gutters and Downspouts:
a. Adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof.
b. Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts.
5. Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
a. Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends.
b. Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace/water heater.
6. Prevent Plumbing Freezes:
a. Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency.
b. Drain all garden hoses.
c. Insulate exposed plumbing pipe.s
d. Drain AC pipes and if your AC has a shut off valve, turn it off.
e. If you go on vacation, leave the heat set to at least 55 degrees.

Reminder to Employers to Distribute Creditable Coverage Notice to Medicare-Eligible Participants by October 15, 2011

http://emersonreid.dmplocal.com/main/index.php?wd=ArticleGateway&article_id=2163&smart_skin_id=58&viewers_email=corinne@bowersinsurance.com&id=2759&ids=57c37dac136252a6e724eb6274a29eef01e9fe8a&utm_source=DMC&utm_medium=EMAIL&utm_content=G1sQC1teByFSChVUSxURWhEXR1EMAlVLAV5U&utm_campaign=2759:Market%2520Beat%2520Newsletter%2520-%2520with%2520auto%2520trigger

Health Reform Update- Small Employer Tax Credit

As you know, the Affordable Care Act allows certain employers
to be eligible for a tax credit. Specifically, the credit is geared
toward employers with 25 or fewer employees with average
income of $50,000 or less. Small employers face two important
deadlines in the coming weeks:
• September 15 – Corporations that file on a calendar year
basis and requested an extension to file to September
15 can calculate the small employer health care credit on
Form 8941 and claim it as part of the general business
credit on Form 3800, which they would include with their
corporate income tax return.
• October 17 – Sole proprietors who file Form 1040 and
partners and S-corporation shareholders who report their
income on Form 1040 have until October 17 to complete
their returns. They would also use Form 8941 to
calculate the small employer health care credit and claim
it as a general business credit on Form 3800, reflected on
line 53 of Form 1040.
In addition, tax –exempt organizations that file on a calendar
year basis and requested an extension to file to November 15
can use Form 8941 and then claim the credit on Form 990-T,
Line 44f.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS),
along with the IRS, will be targeting small businesses and tax
preparers through a new outreach campaign that includes
YouTube videos, emails and tweets to remind employers about
the upcoming extension deadlines and provide details on other
important information about the credit including:
• Business who have already filed can still claim the
credit.
o For small businesses that have already filed and later
determine they are eligible for the credit, they can
always file an amended 2010 tax return. Corporations
use Form 1120X and individual sole proprietors use
Form 1040X.
• Businesses without tax liability this year can still
benefit.
o The Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 provided that
for Tax Year 2010, eligible small businesses may carry
back unused general business credits (including
the small employer health care tax credit) five years.
Previously these credits could only be carried back one
year. Small businesses that did not have tax liability to
offset in 2010 should still evaluate eligibility for the small
business health care tax credit in light of this expanded
carry back opportunity.
• Businesses that couldn’t use the credit in 2010 can
claim it in future years.
o Some businesses that already locked into health
insurance plan structures and contributions for 2010
may not have had the opportunity to make any needed
adjustments to qualify for the credit for 2010. These
businesses may be eligible to claim the credit on 2011
returns or in years beyond. Small employers can claim
the credit for 2010 through 2013 and for two additional
years beginning in 2014.
Additional information about eligibility requirements and
calculating the credit can be found on the Small Business
Health Care Tax Credit for Small Employers page of IRS.gov.

Pool Safety

- Always watch children when they are in or around the pool.
- Teach children basic water safety tips (no running, how to recognize when someone is in danger of drowning, etc.)
- Know how to shut off pool equipment in case of an emergency and post instructions so others can quickly do so.
- Never leave toys or floats in the pool when not in use – they can make tempting targets for toddlers to reach out for.
- Share safety instructions and pool rules with anyone who might at some point be in or around the pool.
- Teach your children to swim or enroll them in swimming lessons. See the attached for further details on topics and how to register.

We have seen a substantial increase in the number of inquiries regarding privacy-related issues. These questions pertain to both the acquisition of “private” information about employees and job applicants and the protection of an employer’s “private” information such as its trade secrets.

In response, we are sponsoring a breakfast seminar that will discuss the following issues:

ACQUISITION OF PRIVATE INFORMATION ABOUT EMPLOYEES/APPLICANTS
1. Keeping a construction site clean of debris can help reduce these hazards. Back-injury prevention programs generally include administrative controls and/or engineering controls. Relying solely on administrative controls, such as training, to reduce costs has not proven successful. And, while engineering controls can be successful, they are most effective when coupled with administrative concepts. Listed below are some examples of management actions, administrative controls, and industrial engineering concepts that, when properly applied, will help to reduce the risk of back injuries. Management Actions • Identify the jobs and tasks that result in back injuries. • Modify or eliminate the task(s) causing back injuries. • Rotate personnel in and out of the jobs that cause back injuries. • Decrease the weight of objects being carried. • Provide nonskid footwear to workers. • Provide adequate lighting, work temperature, noise control, and good housekeeping. • Provide carts, hand trucks, utility vehicles, and wheelbarrows with large wheels. • Provide scissor lifts and spring lift tables. • Mark containers with the weight of the contents. • Provide handles on bags, boxes, and containers. Industrial Work Concepts to Reduce Back Injuries • Minimize body movements by reducing bending, twisting, and reaching motions. • Decrease the forces on the body by reducing the weight of the object and the forces due to moments (load x distance) or the distance between the load and the body. • Decrease carrying forces by eliminating the need to carry or by converting to push or pull actions. • Minimize the push or pull force needed to move an object or reduce the distance that has to be covered. • Reduce the weight of the object and/or reduce the traveling distance the object is carried. Workstation Design Actions • Fit the workstation to the worker (ergonomics). • Design workstations to accommodate the worker in both the sitting and standing positions. • Locate tools, materials, and controls close to the point of use. • Provide gravity feed bins and containers to deliver materials close to the point of use. • Equip workstations with mats to cushion floors and provide a nonskid surface. Several factors are contributing to this surge, including a significant increase in Department of Labor investigations and an ever-increasing number of overtime lawsuits filed under the FLSA.
In order to assist our clients and friends in complying with wage and hour laws, we are sponsoring a breakfast seminar that will discuss these issues from three perspectives:
1. Employer Compliance:
Doug Desmarais will share observations from his perspective of representing employers in this area.
2. Employee Rights:
Steve Lebau, from the plaintiff's law firm of Lebau & Neuworth, has agreed to share his point of view during the seminar. Naturally, this portion of the seminar should be invaluable to our employer clients.
3. Government Enforcement:
Richard Castleton from our Firm will share insights from his previous work as an investigator for the DOL Wage and Hour Division.
The seminar will be held at Abilities Network, located at 8503 Lasalle Road, Towson, Maryland 21286, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 25, 2011.
Continental breakfast will be provided and there is no charge for the seminar. Think Again!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jeff Bowers
Bowers Advisory Group, LLC
THINK YOU DON’T NEED LIFE INSURANCE? THINK AGAIN!
If Anyone Depends on You Financially, You Need It, Says Local Insurance Expert
Hagerstown, Maryland - If you died tomorrow, how would your loved ones fare financially? It’s not a pleasant scenario to think about, but not doing so can have serious consequences. September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, and Jeff Bowers, CFP, CFBS with Bowers Advisory Group, LLC in Hagerstown, Maryland is asking people to think about their life insurance needs and make sure their families would be protected if the worst were to happen.
”The fact is, most Americans need life insurance,” says Bowers. “If someone depends on you financially, you need life insurance. It’s that simple. Unfortunately, roughly 70 million adult Americans have no coverage at all, and most of those who do have far less coverage than financial experts recommend.”
Life insurance, Bowers points out, provides cash to your family after your death. Known as the death benefit, it can help your family pay for the funeral and other final expenses, eliminate credit-card balances and car loans, and provide loved ones with income to live on for a period of time.
Whether a person needs life insurance depends on his or her particular situation and financial objectives. For help determining if you need life insurance, Bowers describes why coverage needs to be an important consideration for each of the following six scenarios:
You’re Married. Married people share a life with one another, but also share financial obligations. If you died suddenly, would your surviving spouse have enough money to pay for your final expenses and buy time to adjust to a new way of life? Life insurance can help ensure that these financial goals will be met.

You’re Married With Kids. Having kids is the most obvious reason to own life insurance. If you and your income were suddenly gone, would your spouse and kids be okay financially? Life insurance replaces lost income to help make sure those who depend on you will be provided for, no matter what life throws your way.

You’re a Single Parent. As a single parent, you're the caregiver, breadwinner, cook, chauffeur, and so much more. You need to make doubly sure that you have safeguarded your children’s future in case you are no longer there to care for them. Make sure you have enough life insurance and designate who will take care of your children in case the unthinkable were to happen.

You’re a Stay-at-Home Parent. Just because you don't bring home a paycheck doesn't mean you don't make contributions to your family that would be expensive to replace. If you were no longer there, could your spouse afford to pay someone to provide the childcare, transportation, cleaning, cooking and other household responsibilities that you handle every day?

You’re Approaching Retirement. The kids may be gone and the mortgage paid off, but that doesn't mean Social Security or your savings will necessarily take care of everything that lies ahead. If you died tomorrow, would your financial strategy, without insurance, enable your spouse to maintain the lifestyle that the two of you worked so hard to achieve?

You’re a Small Business Owner. Life insurance can help protect your business in a number of ways in the event you, your partner, or a key employee dies prematurely. A buy-sell agreement funded with life insurance allows surviving business owners to buy the company interests of a deceased business owner at a previously agreed-on price. Key-person insurance can provide business owners with the flexibility to hire a replacement when the key employee dies.

“Life Insurance Awareness Month is the ideal time for a life insurance review,” says Bowers. “I urge everyone in Washington County to take a few minutes out of their busy schedules this month to make sure they have adequate life insurance protection.”

According to Bowers, consumers can get a general sense of their life insurance needs by going to www.lifehappens.org/lifecalculator and using the online calculator offered by the LIFE Foundation, a nonprofit insurance education group. The next step, suggests Bowers, should be to contact a local insurance professional, who can conduct a more comprehensive needs analysis and help you find the right products to fit your specific needs and budget.

About Life Insurance Awareness Month
Held each September, Life Insurance Awareness Month is an industry-wide effort that is coordinated by the nonprofit LIFE Foundation. The campaign was created in response to growing concern about the large number of Americans who lack adequate life insurance protection. Roughly 70 million adult Americans have no life insurance, and most of those who do have far less coverage than most financial experts recommend. For more information on life insurance, visit LIFE’s website at www.lifehappens.org.

About Jeff Bowers, CFP, CFBS
Bowers Advisory Group, LLC

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bowersinsurance.blogspot.com/2010/08/think-you-dont-need-life-insurance.html' title='Think You Don't Need Life Insurance? The prohibition also applies to the holder of a learner's permit or provisional driver's license. Any other driver of a motor vehicle that is in motion may not use a handheld telephone; instead, the driver may only use his or her hands to initiate or terminate a wireless phone call or turn the handheld telephone on or off. The prohibitions do not apply to the emergency use of a handheld phone, including calls to a 911, hospital, ambulance service provider, fire department, law enforcement agency, or first aid squad. The prohibition is also inapplicable to law enforcement or emergency personnel when acting within the scope of official duty and to the use of a handheld phone as a text messaging device.

The offense is enforceable as a secondary action only. For a first offense, the violator is subject to a maximum fine of $40 and points may not be assessed against their driver's license unless the offense contributes to an accident. The court is authorized to waive the fine for a first time conviction if the person proves that they have acquired a hands free accessory attachment, add on or built in feature for the handheld phone that will allow them to operate a motor vehicle in compliance with the bill's provisions. For a second or subsequent offense, the fine is $100.

Flood Insurance

Homeowners insurance policies DO NOT cover flooding. Insurance policies, passports, wills, medications, health insurance cards, banking information, birth certificates, property records, legal records, credit card information, vehicle titles. If documents are kept in your bank deposit box, keep a list of policy numbers, medications, and photo copies of all pertinent documents.

Documents should be kept in a home fireproof safe or box. Information can be stored on a computer disc/flash drive.

Grab and Go Bags can be kept in a closet by the door to include flash drive with important documentation, flash light/batteries and plastic bags to protect what belongings you are able to gather. Emergency kits are available for purchase at the Red Cross or create your own.

A recent photograph of each family is very important for identification purposes.
Gathering and organizing your information may be time consuming but will make it easier to cope with an emergency situation. Victims will spend anywhere from 3 to 6,000 hours trying to get their identity repaired. There are many forms of Identity Theft. Credit Card Fraud is using someone using your credit card to make purchases. Utility Fraud is starting a utility under someone else’s name, even their own child’s name. Bank Fraud includes stolen checks, changing amount on checks and ATM Passcode theft. Employment Fraud happens when someone uses your social security number when filling out paperwork for an employer. Loan Fraud is when someone takes out a loan in your name.
How do you prevent it? Don’t carry more than you need to in your purse or wallet. Review your credit score on a regular basis. Always look over your credit card statements. Shred credit card offers and anything that has sensitive information. Keep an account of all of your credit card numbers and bank account numbers in a safe protected place. Don’t give out more information than you need to give out. Purchase Identity Theft Protection from your insurance company, bank or credit card. The money you spend can be well worth it to help you restore your good name and have experts help you in a time of need.

Google Announces Google Biking Directions at the League of American Bicyclists' 2010 National Bike Summit

PRESS RELEASE
March 10, 2010
For Immediate Release
Contact: Meghan Cahill
League of American Bicyclists
202.822.1333

Google Announces Google Biking Directions at the
League of American Bicyclists'
2010 National Bike Summit

Washington, D.C. - March 10, 2010 - The League of American Bicyclists is proud to be the forum for Google to announce what all bike riders have been waiting for - Grab Your Bike and Go with Google Maps. Google is announcing at the Opening Plenary Session at the National Bike Summit that they are adding biking directions in the U.S. to Google Maps."This new tool will open people's eyes to the possibility and practicality of hopping on a bike and riding," said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. "We know people want to ride more, and we know it's good for people and communities when they do ride more - this makes it possible. It is a game-changer, especially for those short trips that are the most polluting,"

Users can now choose biking when deciding how to get to their destination, starting today, March 10, 2010. If you're one of the 57 million Americans who ride a bike, mapping your daily commute, and planning recreational or trail rides just became easier. According to Google this has been the most requested addition to Google Maps, and the League is delighted that they have chosen the National Bike Summit to unveil this new feature. Google's announcement further proves the importance of the Summit and the bicycle movement in helping our nation become a more Bicycle Friendly America. The Google biking directions will make it that much easier for bicyclists to get to work, school or play.

This new feature includes: step-by-step bicycling directions; bike trails outlined directly on the map; and a new "Bicycling" layer that indicates bike trails, bike lanes, and bike-friendly roads. The directions feature provides step-by-step, bike-specific routing suggestions - similar to the directions provided by our driving, walking, or public transit modes. Simply enter a start point and destination and select "Bicycling" from the drop-down menu. You will receive a route that is optimized for cycling, taking advantage of bike trails, bike lanes, and bike-friendly streets and avoiding hilly terrain whenever possible.

Visit http://maps.google.com/biking to try out this new feature. Biking directions for Google Maps is currently in Beta. Follow the League's news feed on the new Google feature on the League's Blog, Facebook and Twitter. Left alone, small problems like these can significantly impact the structural integrity of your deck, even leading to potential collapse. Pressure washing and staining your deck are excellent preventative measures.

Clean your air conditioner – If you have a window air conditioner, disconnect the power and carefully clean the exterior of leaves and other debris. You can use a blower, garden hose, brush, or vacuum.

Examine your foundation – Look for any cracks or fissures that are new or have enlarged from an earlier check. Call an arborist if necessary.

Get rid of the clutter – Clean up, organize, or get rid of clutter in your basement, attic, and garage.
Clean your chimney(s) – Call a professional chimney sweep to examine and clean your chimney(s) of soot and creosote buildup.

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield’s February Wellness Webinar

The topic for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield's February Wellness Webinar for employers and benefits managers is WalkingWorks. This seminar will be held Thursday, February 25, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. For further information visit www.carefirst.com/employers/WorkplaceWellness.

COBRA Continuation Coverage Assistance Under ARRA

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), as amended on December 19, 2009 by the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2010 (2010 DOD Act) provides for premium reductions for health benefits under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, commonly called COBRA. Eligible individuals pay only 35 percent of their COBRA premiums and the remaining 65 percent is reimbursed to the coverage provider through a tax credit. To qualify, individuals must experience a COBRA qualifying event that is the involuntary termination of a covered employee's employment. The involuntary termination must occur during the period that began September 1, 2008 and ends on February 28, 2010. The premium reduction applies to periods of health coverage that began on or after February 17, 2009 and lasts for up to 15 months.

Further information is available at http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/COBRA.html.

Winter Driving Tips

As temperatures are dropping and the days are getting shorter, winter quickly approaches. The coming months offer hazardous driving conditions. During winter storms, the leading cause of death is transportation accidents. Being proactive with your vehicle and emergency protocol can make the difference!

Install good tires. Remember, all tires need the recommended amount of tread in order to function properly. Make sure air levels are at the pressure level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer (You can usually find this information printed in the manual). Some jurisdictions even require vehicles to be equipped with chains and/or snow tires.

Windshield scrapers and brushes should be on-hand to aid in snow and ice removal.

Holiday travel should be planned carefully. Keep an eye on the weather report in the week leading up to your trip. Try to aim for daylight driving.

Dress warm – from head to toe. Wear layers and always have a coat.

Tune in to your local radio stations frequently. Typically, these stations will have the most accurate weather conditions for your geographic area.

Have food and water on hand. Keep “munchies” and a few bottles of water in your trunk or glove box along with a blanket and up-to-date phonebook.

Maintain a half tank of gas and a safe antifreeze level.

Slow down and keep a safe distance between you and other drivers.

Watch for bad weather - If the weather is getting progressively worse but you still need to leave home, use public transportation if possible.

12 Days of Christmas to Financial Success

The following is repeated from the Finance and Markets Newsletter of December 13, 2003, and is intended as a holiday tradition for Leimberg Information Services:

"As we approach the holiday season, a time of tradition and thanksgiving, of cheer and renewal, let's reflect through song on the things that are truly important in our lives:

♫ On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me -a savings plan to accumulate 3-6 months of after-tax income to meet emergencies, unexpected layoffs, etc.

♫ On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –life insurance coverage equal to six times annual income.

♫ On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –A valid will

♫ On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –a "Durable Power of Attorney," giving someone the ability to make financial and/or medical decisions on my behalf if I am unable to do so.

♫ On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –a "living will" indicating actions to be taken (or withheld) in the event of a debilitating illness, accident, etc.

♫ One the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –an organ donor card in the event of my death

♫ On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –a safe deposit box to hold valuable papers such as home mortgages, life insurance policies, wills, etc.

♫ On the eighth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –a list of email addresses, computer IDs, passwords, and other computer-related information

♫ On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –a list of pre-authorized payments and other monthly debit transactions that automatically occur in bank or brokerage accounts

♫ On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me –a long-term care insurance policy to provide inflation-adjusted coverage

♫ On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me – A retirement plan, which may include IRAs, 401(k)s, SEPs, and other tax-qualified savings programs

♫ On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me -
